About the event

Join Cook County United Against Hate,  Cook County Commissioner Scott Britton, and Holy Family Catholic Community for a screening of the film "Refuge," followed by a panel discussin with faith leaders on accepting "strangers" into our community. The film, executive produced by Kate Couric, tells the story of Chris  - a husband and father, a veteran, and until recently, a leader in the KKK. He started hating Muslims when the planes hit the Twin Towers, but is forced to confront his hate when he receives a text from Muslim refugee, Heval.

In this time of deep polarization, this film aims to awaken a sense of empathy in viewers and to equip audience members with the tools they need to bring about a more informed, connected, and empathetic society.

Following the film, attendees are invited to stay for a panel discussion moderated by Commissioner Scott Britton.

CONTENT WARNING

Refuge follows the story of a former white nationalist who finds redemption and healing. While ultimately hopeful, the film includes footage that portrays smoking, hate speech and hate symbols, white nationalist rituals, Confederate symbols, guns, and mention of combat, substance abuse, child abuse, torture and mental illness. Viewers who are sensitive to such elements should take care.
