CATCH Partner Blog: Connecting Kindness and Mental Health

When we come together to stand against hate we are also supporting our collective mental health.  How?  Mental health is all about acknowledging our feelings, managing our emotions, and coping with life’s hurdles. And, in many ways it starts with putting kindness first. We can show kindness to ourselves and to others by prioritizing generosity and consideration.

As we give ourselves grace and space to both make mistakes and pat ourselves on the back, we acknowledge our humanity.  We are not perfect, but we are trying.  At any given moment, we are doing the best we can.

We encourage everyone to do the same for others. Let’s show up for one another with open hearts and treat each other with respect and civility, all of which are especially critical when our differences are front and center.  If we start with acceptance and assume the best in others, we are validating fellow human beings and their views, even if different from our own.

Just as we encourage parents to validate their children’s feelings, it’s important for adults too.  By acknowledging another person’s experience, we ensure they feel seen and heard. It’s then that authentic connections are made….and that’s truly what we all need to support our mental health.
